第９０回：「間」と「〇〇まで」を表す表現

時間を示す前置詞について
- DuringとIn：
「during」や「in」は、あるイベントや活動が起こる期間を話すために使用します。その活動は、期間全体にわたって続くことがあります。
例：
I stayed at home during the summer.（夏の間、私は家にいました。）
The population of the city has actually fallen during the last decade.（この10年間、都市の人口は実際に減少しています。）
We went to Turkey during the summer.（夏にトルコに行きました。）
He suffered a number of injuries during his career as a jockey.（騎手としてのキャリアの間に、彼はいくつかの怪我をしました。）
「during」は、病気、休暇、食事、滞在、治療、訪問などの名詞の前で使用し、あるイベントが一定の時間続く場合に使用します。
例えば：
The President made the speech during a visit to Madrid.（大統領はマドリード訪問中にスピーチを行いました。）
No one was allowed to leave the ship during the whole of its time in port.（港での船の滞在中、誰も船から出ることは許されませんでした。）
また、「during」は、時間の全体的な長さを強調するために、「the whole (of)」と一緒に使用することもあります。
- OverとThroughout：
「over」や「throughout」は、ある期間全体にわたって何かが起こることを強調するために使用します。
例：
We had enough firewood to keep us warm throughout the winter.（私たちは冬の間、私たちを暖かく保つための十分な薪を持っていました。）
Weather conditions have been improving over/during the past few days.（過去数日間、天候は改善しています。）
I hit my head and can’t remember anything that happened over/during the next hour or so.（頭を打って、次の1時間ほど何が起こったか覚えていません。）
ただし、期間内で短いイベントについて話す場合は、「during」を使用することが好まれます。
例えば：
She sneezed during the performance.（彼女はパフォーマンス中にくしゃみをした。）
During a pause in the conversation, she left the room.（会話の一時的な中断中に、彼女は部屋を出ました。）
- Until、By、Up to：
何かが一定の時間続いた後で終了することを表すために、いくつかの表現があります。
「until」（または非公式には「till」）を使用して、何かが特定の時間まで続くか、将来まで続くことを示します。「by」は、特定の時間よりも前にまたはその時刻まで何かが起こることを表します。
例：
We have to be at home until 2:30.（2時30分まで家にいなければなりません。）
We have to be at home by 2:30.（2時30分までに家に到着しなければなりません。）
非公式な文脈では、「until」の代わりに「up to」や「up till」を使用することもあります。また、よく「now」と「then」と組み合わせて使われます。
例：
I’ve just bought a tablet computer. I’ve always used a laptop up to now.（私はちょうどタブレットコンピュータを買いました。今までずっとノートパソコンを使っていました。）
「until now」は、今後継続することのない状況を話すために使用されます。
例：
Supermarkets say that until now there has been little consumer interest in buying organic produce.（スーパーマーケットは、今まで有機農産物を購入する消費者の関心がほとんどなかったと述べています。）
しかし、「until now」は将来に継続する可能性のある状況には使用しません。代わりに、「so far」や、より公式な文脈では「to date」を使用することができます。
例：
It was certainly the best match of the football season so far.（それは今までのサッカーシーズンで最高の試合でした。）
When the contract is signed, it will be the building company’s biggest order to date.（契約が締結されたら、それは建設会社の最大の注文となるでしょう。）
前置詞を使って時間を表現する際のニュアンスと使い方について解説しました。
具体例
- During, in, over, throughout:
- I read a book during/in the summer. (or over the summer)
- The concert lasted throughout the night. (or during the night)
- We had a family gathering during/in the holidays. (or over the holidays)
- She learned to play the piano during her childhood. (or in her childhood)
- They traveled to Europe during/in the winter. (or over the winter)
- Over, during:
- The storm raged over/during the weekend.
- I lost my phone over/during the course of the party.
- He studied for his exams over/during the past month.
- The temperature dropped significantly over/during the night.
- The construction work took place over/during the summer break.
- Until, by, up to:
- Please finish your homework until 9 p.m. (or by 9 p.m.)
- The report needs to be submitted by tomorrow morning. (or until tomorrow morning)
- The package should arrive by Friday at the latest. (or until Friday at the latest)
- I will wait for you up to/till 5 o’clock. (or until 5 o’clock)
- He stayed at the party until 2 a.m. (or till 2 a.m.)
Additional examples:
- The museum is open during/in the weekdays.
- She practiced singing throughout the entire year.
- We traveled across Europe during/in the summer vacation.
- The meeting lasted throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
- He worked on the project until late into the night.
- They completed the marathon by the afternoon.
- The store is open until 9 p.m.
- The conference will be held until Friday.
- He has been the CEO of the company until now.
- The team has been undefeated until now.

- During and In:
